There is a parcel of land NW of Hooker near the Kansas state line, we’ve always called it “up north.“ It was settled by a family from the Talequah OK area back in the day. Their name was Ebersole.
My Mom was a daughter of that family. They built a home and lived in those sagebrush hills growing broomcorn on the parts of the land that weren’t too sandy to be farmed. My Mom rode horseback to attend the Lemon School a few miles east.
In these images, you see some of that same land.

Today (June 19, 2925) the winter wheat crop was being harvested.
It was special for a young man, Ezra Ylitalo who lives in Scotland. He was to be able to ride on the combine. His mother is a descendant of the Ebersoles who settled here, they being her great-great-grandparents.
My brother Bob who manages the farm for the family, said Ezra’s Mom had driven a tractor on this very land when she had worked for him.
Ezra for this brief moment is following in those old footsteps.
Thanks to Matt Mills for taking the time to give Ezra a ride and to Bob for letting us know that today was the day. Not tomorrow, but today.
