I’m a person of routine. Or am I a rut person?
I’m really comfortable going through the same things (routine) every morning. My routine starts early. I’m an early riser. Some days I’m a very early riser.
For many months I walk walked everyday. Walk walking is with the Urban Poles my daughter the Physical Therapist got for me. When at home I’m on Blackmer Municipal Golf Course out back. On the road might find me in a motel parking lot. When visiting our daughter in Deer Park IL, I walk down to D’Angelo Park. When visiting our daughter who lives in Scotland, I’ll be up toward Willie’s Wood or maybe along the River Tay in Dundee. I always try for around two miles.
Walk walking quickly became more than exercise. It became a time of enjoyment of the wonders of creation. The sunrise, maybe over the North Sea or maybe the Great Plains of home, interesting birds passing through, or maybe like the Mississippi Kites who call Blackmer Memorial home for the summer. It also became a time of prayer and meditation, if I can borrow that term back from the eastern religions.
I was committed to walking and I felt a certain sadness for those who weren’t seeing what I was seeing.
But then it got cold and I got bronchitis. I said to myself; “I’m not walking if it’s below 30°!” There was a large chunk of time that it was that cold and much colder…and I didn’t walk walk. I quickly developed a new routine. One that I really enjoyed.
Still up early, a bit of breakfast, coffee, reading with my friend Matthew Henry in a book of the Bible, coffee, checking to see if any wisdom had been left for me by my friends on social media, coffee, then reading and probably some writing. A perfect start to the day.
But I knew I needed to walk walk. Most of my ever increasing group of doctors want me to walk. My dentist, my dermatologist, and ophthalmologist don’t seem to care.
So last night I promised myself i would walk walk. This morning I’m up. There’s a beautiful sunrise peaking over Blackmer Municipal. I decided I’m going to go for it.
I get my walking shoes, my poles, my Fitbit, my camera, my phone, some warm clothes (bronchitis remember) and step out on the patio to lace up my shoes.
What’s that I feel? It’s raining! Again!
So after many months of trying to get myself back into walk walking mode, why would it be raining?
Breakfast, coffee, reading, writing, here I come.
And here this is.
Hope you enjoyed it.
