Scotland invades America….

Coming to America, World Cup 2026 (My photo from the Braemar Gathering back in the day)

Scottish World Cup fans have recently done their country proud with their friendly demeanor and demonstrated pride in their great country as they descended in happy droves on a surprised and somewhat demoralized America.  Surely there could be no pipe bands left in Scotland! 🙂

I think we needed that.

Myself, I’m about as Scottish as one can be without being born on a windswept Western isle or in an ancient grey stone castle of Scottish parents. I’m very proud of “us” all.

Back in the mists of time at a sister-in-law’s wedding at the Hunting Tower Hotel in Perth, I was  fully kitted out in Highland attire. I was mistaken for a Scotsman when a nice lady asked me for directions. It so happened I knew where she needed to go and was able to advise her. She commented, “That accent (Oklahoma) does not go with that outfit!” In my own mind I became Scottish that day.

That’s me in the middle….with two of my brothers-in-law

My wife of fifty-six years is a native of Dundee. A daughter who was born in the old DRI, along with her husband, three daughters and two sons lives in Fife. Interestingly, she is a medical doctor at Ninewells Hospital. Three grandchildren are in Scottish universities, two others attend local schools in Fife.

It was the US Navy that started it all. They sent me to Scotland. And then not long after I met this nice looking blonde young lady and somehow convinced her to become my wife. Fifty-sixth years later, she still is.

My posting was to RAF Edzell, hidden in the rural countryside of Aberdeenshire. My Dad, who was stationed at Shipdam Airdrome in England during WW2, had also journeyed to Scotland. And as providence would direct, I would also find myself smitten by the “old country.”

Scotland very quickly became an integral part of my life. I like to say, “spend a week in Scotland and you can never completely go home.”

I could ramble on about living in the picturesque North Sea coast Royal Borough of Inverbervie not far from Dunnottar Castle for several years, but I won’t.

You go Scotland!  Thanks for cheering us up
